According to the above determination, if already formed into the items listed above, they are classified as light property. If raw or cooked silkworm cocoons necessarily harm life, they follow those dead bodies and are classified as heavy property; if they are cocoons from which the moths have emerged on their own leaving the hulls, they are divided as light property according to the Abhidharmamahāvibhāṣā. However, silk and floss produced by silkworms, considering their origin, deeply incur an intrinsic prohibition; therefore, for seeking silk-floss bedding or three robes, the Vinaya rules that they be cut up, chopped, and smeared into clay. Furthermore, for kauśeya and patterned silks, the Nirvāṇa Sūtra explicitly prohibits wearing them; the Aṅgulimāla Sūtra permits receiving them as an expedient to accommodate those of lesser faculties, but later says this does not achieve compassion, because it is not the practice of the Mahāyāna. The Mahīśāsaka vinaya states that if someone brings silk floss to give, it is accepted and surrendered to the saṅgha, not belonging to oneself. The Dharmaguptaka vinaya states that if one obtains finished ones, they are chopped, mashed, and mixed with mud, being judged as not to be worn; since they are obtained fundamentally by harming and destroying life, how could they constitute compassionate Dharma robes! This is precisely what those who harbor the Way dread, and what must primarily incur reproach. Nowadays, the meditation companions in this region all do not wear them, using cloth and moxa for their garments; this may be called a gradual step in learning the practice of the Mahāyāna! I personally asked visiting monks who came from the west: across the five regions of India and all foreign lands, none wear silkworm silk for the three robes; although the kingdom of Khotan raises them, they do so without killing, which reflects and magnifies what was said earlier all the more.
