The five items above are all clothing worn by worldly people; yet since bhikṣus occasionally acquire them, they must be analyzed and judged. Among the first category, sheepskin outfits and coarse wool garments are entirely of the nature of lay attire, and like those above are not light property. For the second category, leather garments, the Vinaya explicitly prohibits them and there should be no exception; but if they are tanned goods that provide a small degree of support for the lower body, their distribution is also permitted. For the third category, ornamental items, they are all the more prohibited; the root Vinaya fully addresses them, and since secular vanity has not been eliminated, by principle they must be discarded—one is not even allowed to touch them, so how could they be among light property? For the fourth category, court robes, although they are not appropriate, items like shirts and pleated skirts can be altered, so they may be classified as light property. Caps, leather items, and the like should be subsumed under heavy property; other items follow this analogy.
