1.66

序曰：有人言：「上列機緣，文理備矣，深知信為道元功德母，智是出世解脫因。但以根鈍時澆，信堅難具，行淺德劣，智正易迷，如何不知大聖立事理之教乎？乃欲統群機之大小，迷於五乘之化；遺隨宜之方便，悟於一道之致。蒙又惑焉，未喻斯理。」

The preface says: Someone said: “The capacities and conditions listed above are complete in text and principle; I deeply know that faith is the source of the path and the mother of merit, and wisdom is the cause of supramundane liberation. However, because faculties are dull and the times are degenerate, firm faith is hard to fully possess; with shallow practice and inferior virtue, correct wisdom is easily lost in delusion. How could one not know that the Great Sage established teachings of phenomena and principle? Yet you wish to unify all the capacities, great and small, deluded by the transformations of the five vehicles; abandoning expedients suited to circumstances, you seek awakening in the purport of the Single Path. I am again perplexed and do not comprehend this principle.”
