Nowadays, those who study the teachings follow three distinct paths, and furthermore cling to their own views to refute other schools; comparing this with the earlier metaphor, the principle cannot tolerate such error. One must cultivate along a single practice, displaying the other two trainings according to one's measure, to make them doubly evident. For instance, when the Buddha established precepts, cultivating them in every sphere is called active adherence; indolence is called cessation transgression, as transgression arises from cessation. Cultivating adherence out of fear of transgression—adherence is called following the precepts. Precepts are called vigilance; this is the training in precepts. Settling the mind in this training cannot be accomplished without concentration; this is called the training in concentration. Reflecting deeply on this training is to extinguish inverted sentiments; indulging without learning follows saṃsāra again; to cut off the root of suffering, without learning it cannot become clear; striving with effort to summon and examine, this is called the training in wisdom. In such gradual realms, the gradual realms rely on the mind; ordinary inversions gradually lighten, sage understanding gradually deepens, and accumulating effort incessantly, nothing fails to be accomplished—a journey of a thousand li begins with a single step, as fully described before. The flow of time is precious; there is no room for self-deception."
