To speak of arousing it through principle: this means that the five aggregates of one's own mind and all phenomena are fundamentally non-self in nature; deeply knowing this essential point is called the bodhicitta. Therefore the Vimalakīrti Sūtra states: 'Quiescence is bodhi, because it is free from all marks; conventional designation is bodhi, because names are empty.' Furthermore, as the Sūtra on Questioning Bodhi states: 'The mark of bodhi transcends the three realms and goes beyond conventional phenomena; speech is cut off, and all arousals are non-arousal—this is called arousing the bodhicitta.' In this way, the various sūtras uniformly dispense with conceptualizations; hence it is called arousing the mind.
