My years are pressing like the rush and willow; morning and evening I await the end. If not to adorn karma, why bother with incidental matters? Furthermore, in describing and compiling the aspects of practice, the followers are indeed numerous; to meet urgent needs according to the times, a general summary has also been provided. Now there are those observing the directions with an aspiration for the Path, who follow one another asking for guidance; for ordinary followers of the final age, rites and veneration are the most pressing. Accepting my writings as a guide to be used like admonishing inscriptions, yet unable to bear their earnest requests, I have therefore set forth this narrative again. Generally speaking, these ten chapters merely center on the three karmas: above, propagating the Buddha Path; below, gathering in oneself and others. The words are most earnest, and the intent lies in dispensing with attachments. I hope that those who read it will understand its meaning; if there are any shortcomings, I await admonition and instruction.
