The Buddha said: “What you have said all fosters arrogance and is not worthy of regard. You should accord with the Dharma's admonitions and circulate them in the world; when you show mutual reverence within my Dharma and Vinaya, the Buddha-Dharma will be able to circulate. The rites of reverence are four: the religious do not bow to the secular, which is the first; monks do not bow to nuns, which is the second; those who maintain the precepts do not bow to those who break the precepts, which is the third; those who were ordained earlier do not bow to those who were ordained later, which is the fourth. As for the rest among the five groups, though their presence or absence differs, they all establish reverence according to the order of their monastic seniority.”
