As for the Three Jewels of the single essence: When the practitioner comes to know that the mind-nature is fundamentally pure and their awakening and understanding are without deviation, this is called correct enlightenment. Enlightenment is the Buddha. The nature being pure and without defilement is the Dharma; the nature being pure and without obstruction is the Saṅgha. Now, awakening to the fundamental is called initial enlightenment; the fundamental substance being truly pure is called prior enlightenment. Settling the mind like this and training the body like this, in all our actions and comportment, no thought will fail to be overcome. The worldly saying goes: "Only the madman, overcoming his thoughts, becomes a sage; only the sage, failing to heed his thoughts, becomes a madman." If those submerged worldly scholars still uttered such expansive words, how could the transcendent path conversely lack this principle? That would be utterly unacceptable.
