“First, explaining ‘relying on the Dharma and not on the person’: a person exists merely in feelings, while the Dharma is the model; the correct principle of innate emptiness is inherently free from falsity, and this very Dharma is taken as the reliance for the correct Dharma. The ultimate teaching of the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra fully clarifies this path. Those who practice phenomena nowadays falsely rely on their feelings, mostly abandoning the Dharma to rely on persons; once this arises, it causes deviation, abandoning reliance and drowning body and mind. If one can reverse that worldly mind, rely on the holy pramāṇa, conceal the mind in undertaking affairs, know that falsity is inherently empty, and take hold of this mind as the road—one part knowing falsity clearly accords with the principle of emptiness, and one part contemplating revulsion clearly goes against phenomenal existence. Settling the mind like this is partially called cultivating and aspiring toward the true path of dharmatā.
