When that person heard this, he still did not believe it; but when it came to bowing to the fifty-three Buddhas, his feelings betrayed arrogance and laxity, and he did not listen to anything. Only when the matter was finished did he awaken, and only then did he begin to feel shame. I further told him: 'You can only examine yourself and vigorously prune [your faults]; when hardship comes, what will you do? What will you do then!' If anyone questions these words, they will find them confirmed only when facing the battle line.
