2.39

The first is called bowing out of self-conceit. This means that, according to one's turn in rank, one's mind lacks reverent respect; exalting oneself and one's own virtue, one has no intent of looking up to a master. Ashamed to ask those below, one has nowhere to seek counsel; with no basis in the Dharma in one's mind, one merely bobs up and down like a pestle. What one performs in this lifetime has no object upon which the mind rests; treating life lightly and taking the Path cheaply, one labors in vain without benefit. Outwardly it appears like bowing, but inwardly arrogance and delusion increase; like a wooden mannequin, one's feelings lack earnest gravity: the hands do not reach the ground, and the five points [of the body] are not complete. This is the karma of arrogance, and is called bowing out of self-conceit.
