Also the Sūtra on the Ascents states: 'After the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, if someone diligently cultivates various merits, without deficiency in dignified deportment, sweeping stūpas and plastering the ground, offering flowers and incense, practicing various samādhis, and reading and reciting the scriptures—such people, although they have not severed their fetters, are as if they have attained the six supernormal powers. They should fix their mindfulness, recollecting the Buddha's image and reciting Maitreya's name. If for a single thought-moment they observe the eight-precept retreat and cultivate various pure karmas, at the time of death they will immediately be reborn on a lotus pedestal in the Tuṣita Heaven, and promptly behold the light of the Buddha's white curl mark, transcending the sins of birth-and-death of ninety billion kalpas, and according to their past conditions, he will preach the wondrous Dharma for them, causing them to attain non-retrogression.'
