Furthermore, the Saṃyuktāgama states: 'Whoever associates with Sudatta is made to receive the three refuges, ultimately to be born in heaven. For one who is pregnant, she receives the three self-refuges on behalf of the child in her womb; after birth, it receives them again; later, when it has knowledge and discernment, it is taught the three refuges once more. If there are slaves, guests, or pregnancies bringing forth children, they are also instructed in this way. If buying slaves, only after they have received the three refuges and the five precepts are they bought; if unable to do so, they are not bought. Even when lending money or charging interest, the other party must receive the three refuges before it is given. If there are those who donate items to the Three Jewels, hearing from the World-Honoured One, having their names proclaimed with aspirational prayers, they will then attain birth in heaven.' The Buddha said: 'Excellent! The Tathāgata possesses unsurpassed knowledge and vision, thoroughly knowing the skillful means by which all attain birth in heaven.'
