On the final morning, General Wei arrived, paid his respects, and inquired after me, no different from the usual etiquette. He said: "This disciple frequently saw the Master in the Anfeng Quarter when you first compiled the Guang hongming ji, discerning the heterodox from the orthodox, and explaining and clarifying it distinctly, differing from previous works; this delighted my hidden mind very much, and I always wished to visit you. However, among the three continents, the affairs of the Buddha and the saṅgha are great, with lawsuits, disputes, the raising of troops, and endless mutual warfare. It is this disciple's official duty to protect them, comfort them, and bring about reconciliation, without pausing even for a moment. That is why I had those earlier messengers speak and deliberate with the Master; only now could I come for a short while, and I cannot stay long. The Master must now understand that the Buddha-Dharma is in decline and obscurity; the various countries of India cannot compare to this region. Although [the monks] here violate the precepts, in general they feel shame and remorse; though internally they transgress, externally they still cautiously protect them. Therefore, when the devas see a single good deed of theirs, they forget a hundred faults; if they see them committing transgressions, they all shed tears and fully provide protection, not allowing the minions of Māra to disturb or harass them."
