He replied: “This does not need to be evaluated; it is not for ordinary, casual men to debate. Master Kumārajīva's rank is presently at the three stages of worthiness, and his transformations are universally effective wherever he goes. Now, his translation of scriptures excised redundancies and supplemented deficiencies, adapting them to the capacities [of beings]. Thus, for the single work of the Da zhidu lun, nine-tenths were abridged; from this, the rest of the scriptures and treatises may be known by analogy. From the time the scriptures were produced until today, their recitation has flourished without interruption or neglect; dark auspiciousness and spiritual resonance descend, and they become ever fresher through successive generations. By this valid cognition of proof, they deeply accord with the sacred intention. Moreover, Mañjuśrī instructed him, causing him to edit and settle them, making him exceptionally distinct from the common run. How could he, because of being ridiculed over a separate chamber, be suddenly forgotten in his profound purport? It is simply not worth discussing.”
