There are two great compounds. The western great compound is where the Saṅgha and the Buddha dwell, named the Bodhimaṇḍa, or the Vajra Compound. Its foundation rises above the ground, set apart with stairs and steps, and on all four sides are niches and caves, all housing marvelous spirits that guard this bodhimaṇḍa compound. The great wall has three tiers, roughly two zhang in height, provided with covered walkways; corridors are set upon one another, and red vermilion and white powder reflect each other. According to the Sigao: 'The outer tiers of the compound wall externally represent the aspects of relying on the Three Refuges for outer protection. The inner tier of the compound wall internally represents the aspects of the Three Jewels' causes and fruits serving as a refuge and mirror. The inner compound rises five chi higher than the outer compound, in order to represent that the causes and fruits of the Three Jewels transcend the five paths.' As for the remainder—the Buddha, Dharma Jewel, and Saṅgha compounds, halls, and chambers, greater or lesser in number—their painted forms and illustrations are exceptional and varied in their classes. There are separate seats for Brahmā and the devarājas, and distinct rooms for the wild spirits and hungry ghosts, all completely prepared for offerings and reception. Regularly on the eight kings' [days] and the six fast [days], material gifts and Dharma gifts are offered according to the occasion; smaller meals and grand meals each have their own proper manner.
