Next is explained the Sangha Courtyard, surrounding the Buddha on three sides, with multi-storied buildings above and below, opening front and back. Inside the rooms there are only couches and mats; quilts and pillows sent to the upper stories never reached here. Beginning from the west, it is called the Assembly's Way Rooms. There are nine bays, with two tiers and three partitions, where bodhisattvas from other lands reside, not a dwelling for ordinary mortals. Next north is one room, with two tiers and one partition, where Mahākāśyapa and Śāriputra dwelt. Next north is one room with tiers and partitions like above; it is Upāli's room, where he constantly resided. Next north is one room where the three—Rāhula, Pūrṇa, and Maudgalyāyana—dwelt. Next north is one room where Culapanthaka dwelt. At the end of the western row, the rooms turning east and running north are half-occupied on the west by those beyond learning (arhats), and half on the east by those of the three fruits. The rooms turning south and running east are occupied on the south by ordinary monks from afar, and on the north by monks who are inner and outer ordinary mortals. This concludes the rooms surrounding the Buddha.
