Next, the second courtyard to the west is named the Courtyard of Books. The diverse writings of the great trichiliocosm are all collected within it. There is a great multi-tiered pavilion housing the books. The Buddha permitted them to be struck and read, without adopting their views, in order to subdue worldly folk. In the center is a small silver drum, borne upon the head of a stone statue of a man. When one wishes to enter the courtyard, the stone man raises his hand upward to strike the drum, and the monastery attendant promptly comes to open the door. The sound of that drum is like the notes of a person's zither. When a bhikṣu reads the books, the drum's sound does not cease, and he naturally attains understanding. The drum was crafted by King Wushi of Pūrvavideha.
