East of the western compound, a compound on the southern side is named the Compound Where Bhikṣuṇīs Come to Request Instruction. One gate opens to the north, facing the eastern gate street; one gate opens to the east. Inside are halls and trees, as in the western compound. At the new moon and full moon of every month, when bhikṣuṇīs come to request exhortation and instruction, they stay in reliance upon this compound. In the compound is a pole roughly three zhang high, made by the asura king. On the pole is a phoenix holding a bronze bell in its beak. When bhikṣuṇīs arrive, the bell sounds by itself. If one is not in accord with the Dharma, the bell emits an evil sound, reviling them with vile words; if there are deeds of vigor, it emits a sound praising them, and also expounds the six perfections and various teachings.
