Next, the one compound to the east is named the Compound of the Rṣis. Its gate opens toward the south, full of halls and trees. In its midst is an ensemble of celestial instruments, formed of three thousand kinds of seven jewels, each supported and held by a seven-jeweled person. When the ṛṣis gather, the instruments sound by themselves, playing divine ṛṣi melodies. When the Buddha enters the Rṣi Compound to preach the Dharma for them, the seven-jeweled persons play melodies of the six perfections and the four truths. The mountain of self-conceit in the ṛṣis of the five superknowledges collapses; some attain the third fruit, and some enter the first stage, which cannot be recounted in full. The sound of this music is heard throughout the four continents. In the time of Vipaśyin Buddha, it was made by the great ṛṣi Māli in the Fragrant Mountain. After that Buddha passed away, Mañjuśrī brought it to Mount Qingliang. When Śākyamuni Buddha appeared, he brought it to the Jetavana. When the Tathāgata entered nirvāṇa, these instruments flew of themselves to the Vajra Cave in Mount Qingliang. The above seven compounds are all east of the great gate.
