North of the Courtyard of the Upāsakas, there are two separate courtyards. The one on the western side is called the Courtyard of Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva. Its gate opens to the southern lane. This great bodhisattva constantly resides within it. Inside is a Buddha hall, fully adorned, with flower ponds and groves of bamboo; devas and humans assemble here, promoting the correct conversion and liberating those with the karmic affinity. There is a great bell tower, as well as a great drum with a silver rim and a gold face. When Mañjuśrī expounds the Six Perfections to the bodhisattvas, the drum expounds the Six Perfections, and it is likewise for the rest of the teachings. This drum came from the Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven to make offerings here. After the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, it returned to the heavens. Its reverberating sound is heard throughout the trichiliocosm, and those in the hells who hear it are freed from suffering and attain liberation.
