After the Buddha passed into extinction, his śarīra was venerated for a full month before the cremation (jhāpita) was begun. When the burning was completed, the śarīra was divided that very day. They went to the Jetavana, and having thoroughly inquired into the matters, thirteen days elapsed before they compiled the Tripiṭaka and then went to Rājagṛha. When the compilation took place, Mahākāśyapa assembled the Sangha. Sthavira [Mahākāśyapa] sent Maudgalyāyana to strike the bell to assemble the hundreds of millions of ordinary and noble monks from the four continents. Thereupon, through a jñapti-caturtha-karman, having punished Piṇḍola and Ānanda, he had Ānanda ascend the high seat, wearing the Tathāgata's saṅghāṭī of coarse cloth. Ānanda received his instruction and first recited the Bequeathed Teaching according to the Buddha's injunctions; the great bodhisattvas, great arhats, all the bhikṣus, and the eight classes of devas and nāgas all wailed and wept with grief. The Venerable Mahākāśyapa rose from his seat, put on a saṅghāṭī of coarse cloth, took his niṣīdāna to the front of the high seat, spread the niṣīdāna, and having prostrated to Ānanda, circumambulated him three times. Mahābrahmā held a jeweled canopy covering Ānanda. Śakra, lord of the devas, advanced with a table of seven jewels and placed it before Ānanda. Māra Pāpīyān held a flywhisk of seven jewels and handed it to Ānanda. Māra and Śakra flanked him on both sides, the Four Heavenly Kings attended the four legs of the high seat, and thirty-two envoys knelt behind Kāśyapa and halted.
