To the east of the Buddha's courtyard, it naturally divides into six places. The courtyards below have southern gates facing the lane. The flowering trees in the lane are as described above. The first courtyard at the eastern end is named the Veda Courtyard. Non-Buddhists share this lineage as their ultimate teaching; the Buddha temporarily permitted bhikṣus to read it in order to subdue the non-Buddhists. Within it is a surrounding gallery, and the texts of the Vedas throughout the four continents are all collected therein. The courtyard has a small drum of the seven treasures; if a bhikṣu wishes to read the Vedic scriptures, the drum sounds of itself, and the monastery attendant holds a key to open the courtyard. This drum was crafted by an artisan from the city of Rājagṛha.
