First, the settlement boundary; (referring to the delimited boundary of a village or town. First is a distinct boundary: for instance, if a settlement has only one household, up to the outside of the settlement, beyond where a flying chicken can reach is called a different boundary. Second is a common boundary: referring to multiple settlements adjoining one another. The Sarvāstivāda-vinayavibhāṣā states: "Between four settlements, where the ladders of carts from the four directions reach one another, if the robes are within the four settlements, they are not forfeited." The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: "If one sleeps across four settlements, with head, feet, and two hands each in a different boundary, and the robe is under the head, when dawn breaks and the head leaves, one incurs forfeiture. If the hands and feet reach each other, one does not commit an offense." The Sarvāstivāda-vinayavibhāṣā states: "If the robe is placed between two boundaries and the body sleeps across the two boundaries, it is not forfeited, because each has a part of the body [within it].")
