Nowadays, upon shaving the head, one immediately wears a five-strip robe, usurping the position of fully ordained monks and deeply violating the original regulation. If teachers and elders have understanding, please follow the noble teachings. When it comes to receiving the precepts, most have no robes or bowl; although the Vinaya requires the master to procure them, who still puts this into practice? They merely wait until the occasion arrives and borrow earthenware bowls, greasy bowls, or old, dilapidated great robes from others. The śrāmaṇera does not know right from wrong, and when did the ācārya ever inspect them? The Vinaya says: 'If one has none or borrows them, it is not called receiving the full ordination.' How can one begrudge a small amount of wealth and material, causing someone to be without precepts for their entire life, eating the offerings of the faithful in vain, and sinking into rebirth for ten thousand kalpas? This is truly lamentable! Although what is past cannot be corrected, what is to come can still be pursued.
