Since the Bhagavat Maitreya’s loving-kindness flourishes in this present world and his compassion reaches future kalpas, the title was assigned according to the circumstances and one dare not alter it. Relying on the power of this mindfulness, we wish to guard and protect the Three Jewels, make Māra conceal himself, subjugate those who are arrogant and full of overweening pride, cause those who have not planted wholesome roots to plant them now, cause those who have already planted wholesome roots to increase them now, cause all who grasp at attainment and abide in views to give rise to the resolve of renunciation, cause those who delight in the lesser teachings not to doubt the Great Teaching, and cause those who delight in the Great Teaching to give rise to joy. Furthermore, this compassion and loving-kindness is the king among all wholesome deeds and the refuge of all sentient beings. It is like the sun illuminating the day and the moon illuminating the night; it is an eye and a guide to people, a parent and a sibling to people; together turning to the bodhicitha, it is a true kalyāṇamitra. The closeness of compassion and loving-kindness is weightier than flesh and blood; following one another life after life, even in death it does not part. Therefore, designating the impartial mind, the title is proclaimed as above.
