There was another ghost who said to Maudgalyāyana: “Ever since I was born, there have been two glowing iron wheels beneath my armpits, burning my entire body to a crisp. What sin caused this?”
Maudgalyāyana answered, saying: “In your past life, you made cakes for the saṅgha and stole two batches, tucking them under your two armpits. Because of these causes and conditions, you incurred this retribution. This is the flower retribution; the fruit will be in hell.”
There was another ghost who said to Maudgalyāyana: “I always use an object to wrap and cover my head, fearing people will come to kill me, my mind constantly terrified. What sin caused this?”
Maudgalyāyana answered, saying: “In your past life, you committed adultery with outside women, constantly fearing people would see you, or fearing their husbands would seize, bind, beat, and kill you; because you constantly harbored terror, you received this retribution. This is the flower retribution; the fruit will be in hell.”
