Thus have I heard: At one time the Buddha was staying in Rājagṛha, on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa, together with an assembly of bodhisattva-mahāsattvas and śrāvakas, as well as bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, upāsikās, devas, nāgas, ghosts, and spirits, all gathered together. At that time, the bodhisattva Faith-Appearance addressed the Buddha, saying: 'Bhagavat! There are now hells, hungry ghosts, animals, male and female slaves, the poor, the rich, the noble, and the lowly, of many various kinds. Whenever sentient beings hear the Buddha preach the Dharma, they are like a child finding its mother, like a sick person finding a physician, like a naked person finding clothes, like someone in darkness finding a lamp. The Bhagavat's preaching of the Dharma to benefit sentient beings is also like this.' At that time, the Bhagavat, seeing that the time had arrived and knowing that the bodhisattvas were earnestly entreating him, immediately emitted from the white ūrṇā between his eyebrows a light that illuminated immeasurable worlds in the ten directions; the hells rested, and their pains were calmed. At that time, all the sentient beings undergoing retribution for their sins, following the Buddha's light, came before the Buddha, circumambulated him seven times, paid homage with utmost sincerity, and entreated the Bhagavat to broadly proclaim the transforming guidance of the Way so that all sentient beings might receive liberation.
