4.10

There was yet another sentient being through whose body a blazing iron pellet entered from above and exited from below, walking through empty space with agony unbearable. Maudgalyāyana asked the Buddha: "What sin causes him to undergo this suffering now?" The Buddha answered Maudgalyāyana: "In the past, this person was a śrāmaṇera who stole seven fruits from the monastic community's orchard. Upon death, he entered hell and underwent immeasurable suffering. Because the residual karma is not yet exhausted, he has incurred this retribution."
