In the "gradual," at the beginning one also knows true reality; but true reality is difficult to understand, while gradual progression is easy to practice. First one cultivates the refuges and precepts, turning from the heterodox toward the correct, calming [the rebirths of] fire, blood, and swords, and reaching the three good destinies. Next one cultivates dhyāna-concentration, calming the net of desire and distraction, and reaching the path of concentrations of the form and formless realms. Next one cultivates the uncontaminated, calming the prison of the three realms, and reaching the path of nirvāṇa. Next one cultivates kindness and compassion, calming self-realization, and reaching the path of the bodhisattva. Later one cultivates true reality, calming the bias of the two extremes, and reaching the path of eternal abiding. These are the characteristics of the gradual calming and contemplation, shallow at first and deep later.
