A questioner asks: "'The characteristic of all phenomena is quiescence and extinction; it cannot be expounded in words.' The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: 'Arising from arising is ineffable, and so forth up to non-arising from non-arising is ineffable.' Whether shared or distinctive, the path of words is severed; there is neither one who can speak nor anything that is spoken. Śāriputra said: 'I have heard that within liberation there is no verbal expression, therefore I do not know what to say here.' The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says: 'What is spoken is without speaking and without showing; those who listen to the Dharma are without hearing and without attaining.' This person cannot speak, and this Dharma cannot be spoken—why then speak to instruct people?"
