10.28

夫因聞多發理見，少發神通、韋陀；因禪多發神通、韋陀，少發理見。發理見者，伏學人；發神通，伏俗人。俗人取異不取解；學人取解不取異。發韋陀兼伏，具發三者最能兼伏。因禪發者已如上說，因聞發者今當說。

Generally, from hearing [the teachings] one mostly generates views of principle and rarely generates supernormal powers or the Vedas; from meditation one mostly generates supernormal powers and the Vedas, and rarely generates views of principle. One who manifests views of principle subdues scholars; one who manifests supernormal powers subdues ordinary people. Ordinary people grasp at the wondrous and do not grasp at understanding; scholars grasp at understanding and do not grasp at the wondrous. One who manifests the Vedas concurrently subdues [both]; one who fully manifests all three is best able to concurrently subdue [both]. Those manifested from meditation have already been explained above; those manifested from hearing will now be explained.
