With respect to the shared, distinctive, and perfect [teachings] and so forth, each has four gates that generate views. Each view also possesses the three lines of practice. Those who practice good can be understood. Those who practice evil grasp the statements in the Mahāyāna that 'craving is itself the Way' and 'within the three poisons all Buddha-dharmas are complete.' Such true words were originally meant to extinguish afflictions, yet through mistaken clinging they still generate fetters and karma, with praise and blame generating grief and love, deceit and arrogance bringing snarling, and rivalry over fame and gain. Personal practice is one, and converting others has four modes. Since they are not uncontaminated, ignorance moistens their karma, and the force of karma drags them into rebirth—where would they not go? We cannot explain this in detail; it can be understood by analogy with the preceding.
