2.118

初句上品。佛世之時身子等是其人也。行人於善法中修止觀者，以勤修善法，未來無遮，常習止觀令其根利。若過去具此二義，今生薄修即得相應，從觀行位入相似、真實。今生不得入者，昔無二義。今約善修，令未來疾入。

The first phrase represents the highest grade. In the Buddha's time, Śāriputra and others were such persons. When practitioners cultivate calming and contemplation in the midst of wholesome dharmas, through their diligent cultivation of wholesome dharmas they will have no hindrances in the future, and by constantly practicing calming and contemplation their faculties are made sharp. If in the past they possessed both of these factors, in this life with slight cultivation they will attain conformity, passing from the stage of contemplative practice into the stages of resemblance and reality. Those who in this life cannot enter did not possess these two factors in the past. Now, by cultivating through the wholesome, they will enter quickly in the future.
