Yet, driven and employed by the mind, there are coming and going: either to break precepts, or to deceive others, or for the sake of kin, or to conquer another, or out of righteous deference, or for good dhyāna, or for nirvāṇa; or out of loving-kindness and compassion, renouncing the six dusts (sense objects) and carrying out the six activities. Coming and going by skillful means, lifting a foot and placing a foot are entirely like illusions and phantoms, indistinct and imperceptible, obliterating agent and object: a road of a thousand li is not considered far, and a stretch of several paces is not considered near. Whatever one does, the effort is not in vain, nor does one hope for reward. Abiding in dāna in this way gathers and accomplishes all Buddha-dharmas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, fully embodies the Mahāyāna, and is able to reach the other shore.
