If ordinary people indulge in evil hindrances, break down, and fall downwards, they will have no time of escape; they should practice contemplative wisdom right within evil. For example, during the Buddha's lifetime, laypeople who had wives and children and engaged in official duties and worldly affairs were all able to attain the Way. Aṅgulimāla killed ever more yet became ever more compassionate; Jeta and Mallikā were absorbed only in wine and precepts respectively; Vasumitrā indulged in lust yet engaged in pure conduct; Devadatta had wrong views, which were themselves right. If within various evils it were exclusively evil and one could not cultivate the Way, people such as these would eternally remain ordinary mortals. Because the Way exists within evil, although they enacted manifold hindrances, they were able to become sages; hence one knows that evil does not obstruct the Way.
