Next, concerning the separation and combination of the four truths: the previous three truths, two truths, and one truth were all discussed vertically; the four truths are discussed horizontally. Thus there are four kinds of four truths, namely: arising and ceasing, non-arising and non-ceasing, immeasurable, and unconditioned. The four truths of arising and ceasing are the horizontal unfolding of the two truths of the Tripiṭaka. The four truths of non-arising are the horizontal unfolding of the two truths of the shared teaching. The four truths of the immeasurable are the horizontal unfolding of the two truths of the distinctive teaching. The four truths of the unconditioned are the horizontal unfolding of the one real truth of the perfect teaching. Now, applying the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā to match these four sets of four truths: the treatise states, 'Dharmas that arise from causes and conditions'—this is the four truths of arising and ceasing; 'I say are empty'—this is the four truths of non-arising; 'And are also provisional designations'—this is the four truths of the immeasurable; 'And also the meaning of the middle way'—this is the four truths of the unconditioned.
