3.166

復次，根本四禪，定慧等故，兩攝。欲界，定少慧多，觀攝。中間亦爾。四空，定多慧少，止攝。四無量心：前三心，觀攝；捨心，止攝。九想、八念、十想，觀攝。八背捨：前三背捨，觀攝；後五，止攝。九次第定、師子奮迅、超越等，是止攝。

Furthermore, the four fundamental dhyānas, because concentration and wisdom are equal, are encompassed by both. In the desire realm, concentration is little and wisdom is much, so it is encompassed by contemplation. The intermediate [dhyāna] is likewise. The four formless [attainments] have much concentration and little wisdom, so they are encompassed by calming. The four immeasurable minds: the first three minds are encompassed by contemplation; the mind of equanimity is encompassed by calming. The nine visualizations, the eight recollections, and the ten visualizations are encompassed by contemplation. The eight liberations: the first three liberations are encompassed by contemplation; the last five are encompassed by calming. The nine successive attainments, the lion's sprint, surpassing [samādhi], and so forth are encompassed by calming.
