The calming and contemplation embodying dharmas has four gates in all, and in every single gate the ten dharmas are complete to fulfill the contemplation. This contemplation not only embodies the retributional form and mind of tīrthikas, but also for all attachments—those clinging to the four gates of the Tripiṭaka, and even those who have not yet entered through the four gates of the perfect teaching and cling to the gates to form views—it embodies them all as like an illusion; this is definitively named 'Mahāyāna calming and contemplation.' If one grasps the present intention of employing contemplation, attachments arising in the gates of the Mahāyāna still must be broken through emptiness. It is never like those worldly Dharma masters and dhyāna masters who claim that Laozi's 'Dao and De' and Zhuangzi's 'Free and Easy Wandering' are equal to the Buddha-Dharma; that meaning is incorrect. If attachment arising in the perfect gate is still broken even by the first gate of the Tripiṭaka, failing even to enter the Hīnayāna, how much more so for the vulgar minds of ordinary views? Separated as firefly from the sun, distant as a mountain from a tip of hair, when they claim their own Dao is true and act arrogantly toward Gautama, how could they not be refuted?
