答：次第三觀，二乘及通菩薩有初觀分；此屬定多慧少，不見佛性。別教菩薩有第二觀分；此屬慧多定少，亦不見佛性。二觀為方便，得入第三觀，則見佛性。

Answer: In the graduated three contemplations, the two vehicles and bodhisattvas of the shared teaching possess a portion of the first contemplation; this belongs to an excess of concentration and a deficiency of wisdom, so they do not see the Buddha-nature. Bodhisattvas of the distinctive teaching possess a portion of the second contemplation; this belongs to an excess of wisdom and a deficiency of concentration, so they also do not see the Buddha-nature. With the two contemplations as expedients, they are able to enter the third contemplation, and then they see the Buddha-nature.
