3.85

○二、明眼智者，體則非知非見、非因非果，說之己自難，何況以示人？雖叵知見，由於眼智，則可知見；雖非因果，由因果顯。止觀為因，智眼為果。因是顯體之遠由，果是顯體之近由。其體冥妙，不可分別；寄於眼智，令體可解。

2. Explaining the eyes and wisdoms: the substance is neither knowing nor seeing, neither cause nor fruit; speaking of it is already difficult in itself, so how much more so showing it to others? Although it cannot be known or seen, through the eyes and wisdoms it can be known and seen; although it is not cause or fruit, it is revealed through cause and fruit. Calming and contemplation are the cause; wisdom and the eyes are the fruit. The cause is the remote origin that reveals the substance; the fruit is the proximate origin that reveals the substance. Its substance is profound and wondrous, beyond distinction; we rely on the eyes and wisdoms so that the substance can be understood.
