As for learning and study: before one has attained the forbearance of non-arising, cultivating worldly wisdom and eloquence with their various discriminations is entirely [gathering] tiles, rubble, grass, and trees—not the true jewel. If one can bring [the mind] to a halt, the water will become clear; looking down at the lapis lazuli, one calmly and slowly takes the jewel. One will then know the characteristics of the worldly dharmas of arising and ceasing, along with their various categories of action—what would one not know? One knows with sarvākārajñatā, and sees with the Buddha eye. Wishing to travel the great path, one should not learn from that narrow trail.
