Third, discarding the five hindrances: namely, sensual desire, ill will, drowsiness and sleep, restlessness and remorse, and doubt. They are collectively called 'hindrances' because they cover and entangle [the mind], the mental spirit becomes dark, and concentration and wisdom do not arise; therefore they are called 'hindrances'. The previous rebuking of the five desires concerned the five sense faculties confronting the present five dusts to give rise to the five consciousnesses. Now, discarding the five hindrances means that the five consciousnesses turn and enter the mental ground, pursuing past or anticipating future dharmas such as the five dusts, serving as major inner obstacles to the mind. It is like a potter whose body is ill and who cannot perform his work. The hindrances are also like this: because their hindrance is profound, one additionally discards them. It is like cutting down a poisonous tree or arresting a thief; they must not be kept. The Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā Sūtra states: 'Detach from desires and bad dharmas.' Detaching from desires refers to the five desires, as rebuked before. Bad dharmas refers to the five hindrances, which must be discarded urgently.
