As for the hindrance of doubt: this is not the doubt that obstructs the principle upon seeing the truth, but the doubt that obstructs concentration. There are three kinds of doubt: first, doubting oneself; second, doubting the master; third, doubting the teaching. First, doubting oneself: thinking that one's own body is lowly and certainly not a vessel for the path, one therefore doubts oneself. Second, doubting the master: [thinking] this person's bodily and verbal deeds do not accord with my mind; how could he certainly possess deep dhyāna and fine wisdom? If I take him as master and serve him, will he not mislead me? Third, doubting the teaching: does the teaching received necessarily accord with the principle? When these three doubts of hesitation are constantly harbored in the breast, meditative concentration will not arise; even if it arises, it is permanently lost. This is the characteristic of the hindrance of doubt.
