4.156

若瞋恚蓋多，當念慈心，滅除恚火。此火能燒二世功德，人不喜見。毒害殘暴禽獸無異，生死怨對累劫不息；即世微恨，後成大怨。今修慈心，棄捨此惡；觀一切人，父母親想，悉令得樂。若不得樂，我當勤心令得安樂，云何於彼而生怨對？作是觀時，瞋心即息，安心入禪。

If the hindrance of ill will is abundant, one should be mindful of loving-kindness, extinguishing the fire of anger. This fire can burn up merit in two lifetimes, and people dislike seeing it. One is no different from beasts in being poisonous, harmful, cruel, and violent; the resentments and enmities of birth and death do not cease for kalpas on end. A slight grievance in the present lifetime becomes a great feud later. Now, cultivating a mind of loving-kindness, discard this evil; contemplate all people as parents and relatives, causing them all to attain joy. If they do not attain joy, I should diligently cause them to attain peace and joy; how could I give rise to resentment and antagonism toward them? When one performs this contemplation, the angry mind immediately subsides, and one enters dhyāna with a peaceful mind.
