The five hindrances of sharp proclivities obstruct the true truth. As explained previously regarding those with views of emptiness, they grasp what they adhere to as real and [regard] the rest as false speech. When things oppose it, there is hatred; when things accord with it, there is attachment—these are the two hindrances of greed and hatred. The dark mind of avidyā erroneously holds to attachments without clear and discerning knowledge; this is the hindrance of drowsiness and sleep. Various types of conceptual proliferation and disputes over views without benefit; this is the hindrance of restlessness and regret. While at that moment there is no doubt, later there arises great doubt. Why? Since they grasp it as real, what is there left to doubt? Later, if it is refuted, doubt arises in their mind. These five cover the mind so that one never sees the truths.
