Once one recognizes that one's own mind's single desire is all desires, one then recognizes that it is likewise for all sentient beings. Setting aside the other realms for now, looking directly at the human realm: various forms, various sounds, various mental activities, and various environmental rewards are each distinct. One should know that the causes of desire are of immeasurable varieties. The causes and effects of a single person are already endless, how much more so those of many people? If one realm is like this, how much more so the nine dharmadhātus? If one dharma is like this, how much more so the hundred dharmas? For example, when facing an enemy, the enemy is the basis of merit; because one can defeat the enemy, one achieves great fame and attains great wealth and honor. Immeasurable greed and desire being the seed of the Tathāgata is also like this: they enable the bodhisattva to produce immeasurable hundreds of thousands of Dharma portals. When firewood is plentiful, the fire is fierce; from foul manure, flowers grow; "greed and desire are themselves the Path" refers to this. If one severed greed and desire and abided in the emptiness of greed and desire, whence could all Dharma portals arise? A sūtra says: "Without severing the five desires, one can purify all sense faculties." When contemplating in this way, the five hindrances of conventional truth are naturally purified.
