Regulating food: food that increases illness, increases sleep, and increases defilements should not be eaten; substances that pacify the body and heal diseases are what should be eaten. Briefly speaking, being neither hungry nor overfilled is the characteristic of regulated eating. The Nirgrantha-sūtra says: "Eating to excess makes the body difficult to move; one becomes indolent, negligent, and lazy; the eaten food is difficult to digest, losing the benefits of two lifetimes; one experiences suffering from drowsiness, and in confused torpor it is difficult to awaken."
