Regarding regulating the five matters by contemplating the mind: as stated before, the delight of the Dharma and the joy of dhyāna serve as food. The concentration and wisdom generated by first contemplating the truth of emptiness mostly enter emptiness and eliminate and purify all dharmas; this is the 'mark of hunger.' The *Lotus Sūtra* says: 'Hungry, emaciated, and thin, the body broke out in sores and scabs.' The concentration and wisdom generated by the second contemplation of conventional truth mostly sustain the conventional and provisionally establish all dharmas; this is called the 'mark of fullness.' Therefore it says: 'Practicing for kalpas the Buddha-dharmas numerous as the sands of the Ganges.' In these two contemplations, hunger and fullness are unregulated. The joy of dhyāna and delight of the Dharma of the middle way are balanced and moderate, without the bias of the two extremes. This is called 'neither hungry nor full' (and so forth).
