今就五品之前，假名位中，復論遠近：二十五法為遠方便；十種境界為近方便。橫竪該羅，十觀具足，成觀行位，能發真似，名近方便。今釋遠方便略為五：一、具五緣，二、呵五欲，三、棄五蓋，四、調五事，五、行五法。

Now, prior to the five ranks, within the stage of provisional designation, we further discuss the distant and the near: the twenty-five dharmas are distant expedients; the ten kinds of objects are near expedients. Comprehensively encompassing both horizontal and vertical, fully possessing the ten contemplations, perfecting the stage of contemplation practice, able to give rise to the true and semblance—these are called near expedients. Now explaining the distant expedients, they are briefly five: first, fulfilling the five conditions; second, rebuking the five desires; third, abandoning the five hindrances; fourth, regulating the five matters; fifth, practicing the five dharmas.
